Inspiring the next generation of scientists
In one more step for regional capacity reinforcement, the Transnational Red Sea Center and the University of Djibouti organised the third annual Coral Reef Ecology and Fieldwork Workshop, a week-long session held in April in Djibouti. This year’s program welcomed yet a new dynamic group of over 130 science students, bringing the total number trained to more than 300 to date since the programme was established in 2023!
Led by an international team of marine science specialists, including experts from Djibouti, the workshop combined hands-on fieldwork with engaging classroom sessions focused on coral reef science and conservation. A special Career Day featured the Ministry of the Environment and leading local experts in marine science and fisheries - offering students valuable insights into professional pathways in ocean conservation.
This third workshop, and the educational programme itself, aims at paving the way for the creation of a regional Master’s in marine sciences and conservation - strengthening local expertise, leadership and regional collaboration across the Red Sea region and beyond.
