Expedition year 1: heading for Sudan

It is now official: the Transnational Red Sea Center at EPFL will conduct its first expedition season bridging science and diplomacy for the future of corals in Sudan from the end of July to the end of August. The announcement was made from Aqaba, Jordan, where the Fleur de Passion expedition platform and sailing vessel will set sail in mid-July. In the presence of the Swiss ambassador to Jordan, Lukas Gasser, the official launch ceremony at the Ayla Marina brought together numerous representatives of the Jordanian authorities, academia and diplomacy to celebrate the beginning of an ambitious long-term initiative: to bring together the scientific community of the Red Sea countries around a common vision - and action - of the challenges of research and preservation of the last coral "refuge" in the world. Among the first scientific partners of the expedition are the Marine Science Station of the University of Jordan in Aqaba, the Interuniversity Institute for Marine Research in Eilat and the Institute of Marine Research as well as the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries of the Red Sea University in Port Sudan.
